Overview of the Technical Field Guide: This document describes managed grazing techniques, such as those used for several demonstrations sites in the Galisteo Watershed as part of the Galisteo Watershed Restoration Project. This project is sponsored by the New Mexico Environment Department with financial support under Clean Water Act Section 319(h) administered by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The project attempts to ameliorate surface water quality in New Mexico waters by reducing non-point source pollution of the waters of the Galisteo Creek.

Contents of the Technical Field Guide: This document explains a set of bio-technical stream restoration techniques, called “Induced Meandering,” for mid-elevation streams in New Mexico. The restoration techniques help restore a natural meandering pattern of streams that have become too straight and erosive. The document is meant to guide landowners and stream restoration practitioners in appropriate methods for hands-on restoration of degraded gullies, streams and dry stream beds. The document explains the general concepts and terminology of Induced Meandering and describes various types of structures and their appropriate location in streams. The document is expressly not developed as a designer’s guide.

This document is meant to guide landowners and stream restoration practitioners in selecting and building appropriate, bio-technical erosion control structures. Although it may be of use to professionals, it is not meant to serve as a professional planning or design manual.
